About Project Mexico
At Project Mexico volunteers build homes for families living in extreme poverty in Northern Mexico. Each house goes up in four days, built entirely by hand and alongside the family who will live in it. A safe, weather-tight home changes what’s possible for that family and translates to greater stability and an encounter with the body of Christ.
St. Innocent Orphanage
Near Rosarito, Mexico, a sixteen-acre ranch is home to boys who had nowhere else to go. St. Innocent not only gives them a home but also schooling, sports, faith, and the daily attention of staff and volunteers who treat them as family.
Completing the Frescos
Every summer, volunteers gather at the Summer Prayer Pavilion on the ranch for services, talks, and more.
Multiple parts of the community are deeply involved in the installation process, making it a highly organic collaboration in which everyone takes ownership of the work. Many aspects of the project, including wall preparation and certain ornamental details, are executed by practitioners, volunteers, and boys from the orphanage under the guidance and supervision of the iconographer.
Completing the frescos would help complete and beautify the space which serves as a pivotal resources for Orthodoxy in northern Mexico.
Meet the Iconographer
iLia Anossov is one of the few living masters of both fresco and sgraffito. Trained through years of classical apprenticeship in Russia and the United States, he settled in Los Angeles in 1996 and founded the Fresco School after finding the medium treated as a lost art in America. He has spent three decades teaching it and has painted large-scale iconography cycles across the United States and Mexico and is also an integral member of the Project Mexico team.
